舞台は今から20年前、2000年代初頭の台湾・桃園。台湾クラブ史上もっとも絢爛にして獰猛だったこの時代、「たった一軒のクラブによって、台北中のすべてのクラブが潰される」とクラブ関係者たちが慄くほどの存在感を放っていたのが、桃園でわずか数年だけ営業した怪物箱「獅子王」だった。週末の一晩で6,000人を動員したと語られるフロアでは、おもにハードなハウスやトランス、ブレイクビーツに中国語圏のヴォーカルを織り交ぜた独自の中華式ADMが猛威を振るっていた。それはやがてこの地に根付く「台客式」、大陸の「慢揺」、ベトナムの「ビナハウス」などへと変貌を遂げてゆくことになるのだが──。
ADM#006では、その開業からレジデントDJとして“伝説のクラブ”を支えた@LとFIONをフィーチャーする。収録された楽曲の多くは、おもに2000年初頭にヒットした中華ポップスを攻撃性の高いフロア仕様へと改変したブートレッグで、実際に二人がリミックスを手掛け、当時の「獅子王」でも頻繁にプレイされていたもの。まさに夜半の獅子を想起させる、ワイルドで危険な獣臭が充満する60分。ダウンロードコード付き。

1980年代中頃、改造した自作のターンテーブルでDJのスキルを鍛え、台北市内のディスコで活動を始める。台湾のクラブ黎明期から長く一線に身を置き、テクノ／ドラムンベースを基調したスタイルを確立。「獅子王」オープンにはディレクター兼DJとして参画し、フロア全体を管理する立場として携わった。同時期に〈BPM production〉を設立、同クラブの閉業後は各地でフェスやレイヴを主催するなど、台湾のダンスミュージック文化に多大な貢献を果たしている。
■FION
台湾東部・花蓮出身のFIONは、台湾原住民である阿美族に出自をもつフィメールDJという点で、この分野における代表的な先駆者である。1990年代初頭よりキャリアをスタートさせると、その類まれなリズム感覚と技術を武器にテクノ、ブレイクビーツ、ヒップホップなどをジャンル横断的にプレイ。2000年代に入ると、「獅子王」の開業とともにレジデントDJ兼照明監督として一時代を築いたクラブを支えた。現在は、同じく「獅子王」のレジデントDJを務めていたパートナーの@Lとともに〈BPM production〉に籍を置き、台湾各地のレイヴやフェスティバルで活動を続けている。

Set twenty years ago in early-2000s Taoyuan, Taiwan: a period remembered as the most flamboyant and ferocious era in Taiwanese club history. At the center stood a monstrous venue known as Lion King, a club so dominant that insiders whispered it could single-handedly wipe out every club in Taipei. Operating for only a few short years, it left behind a legend. On its dancefloor—reportedly drawing as many as 6,000 people in a single night—an aggressive hybrid of hard house, trance, and breakbeats interwoven with Mandarin vocals reigned supreme. This uniquely Sinophone strain of ADM would later evolve into Taike-style in Taiwan, man yao in mainland China, and Vietnam’s Vinahouse.
For ADM#006, we spotlight @L and FION, who, as resident DJs, carried this “legendary club” from its opening days. Most of the tracks featured here are bootleg reworks of early-2000s Mandopop hits—aggressively retooled for the floor—that the two themselves remixed and played regularly at Lion King. Beginning in the mid-1980s with a self-modified turntable of his own making, @L honed his DJ skills before stepping into Taipei’s discos. From the dawn of Taiwan’s club culture, he remained on the front line, developing a style rooted in techno and drum’n’bass. As both director and DJ, he played a central role in the opening of Lion King, managing the entire dancefloor operation. Around the same time, he founded BPM Production, and after the club’s closure went on to organize festivals and raves across the island—making a lasting contribution to Taiwan’s dance music culture.
■FION
Hailing from Hualien in eastern Taiwan and of Amis indigenous heritage, FION is recognized as a pioneering female DJ in the field. Launching her career in the early 1990s, she wielded her extraordinary sense of rhythm and technical skill to play across genres—techno, breakbeats, hip-hop, and more. With the opening of Lion King in the 2000s, she became a resident DJ and lighting director, helping to define an era. Today, alongside her partner @L—also a Lion King resident—she is part of BPM Production, performing at raves and festivals throughout Taiwan.
